This March, we are going to tell to all of you a story, because we think that every journey needs a story to be told, to be seen, to be understood, to be recognized then to be trusted. Therefore we want to tell you a story. It is a story about a plant, a species, a child of mother nature, hidden behind a story of a brand, a bussiness, a local brand owns a desire of reaching out to the world by our natural & national products – from Vietnam homeland.
In Vietnam, this species is called under many names in regions. In Phu Quoc Island, the species is divided in two species. Do nghe has yelowwish hard wood, while Do bau has soft, white colored wood. In the central Vietnam, Aquilaria crassna Pierre is divided into four species: Do bau huong, Do me, Do day and Do bau thuong. Besides, Aquilaria crassna Pierre is classfied into species like Do bau; Do niet; Do me; Do gach, etc…
The above classification caused difficulty in determining the scientific name of each species. There are scientific disagreements in classification and scientific names. However, the species in Vietnam is Aquilaria crassna Pierre ex Lecomte, which has been favoured by farmers and wide propagated because this species can produce the best quality Agarwood.
Agarwood is founded inside Aquilaria trees. Aquilaria is a family consisting of 25 species, only 19 of which can produce Agarwood. According to Professor Gishi Honda (Tokyo University – Japan), Aquilaria Crassna in Vietnam produces the best Agarwood of the world.
In reality, Agarwood products and quality, produced by Aquilaria crassna Pierre varies from place to place. In Vietnam, Agarwood collected in the central Vietnam are always higher in quality and produced in a larger amount in any other places in Vietnam, especially Van Gia-Van Ninh in Khanh Hoa province, has been well-known for the world’s best quality Agarwood.
While the source of Agarwood in South Asian nations has decreased because of deforestation and over-exploitation, Vietnam, with a large quantity of Aquilaria trees, is recognized as the country owning the highest quality Agarwood.
