The custom of using Agarwood (Oud) chip in Christianity

The incensation of Agarwood (Oud) incense was mentioned in Christianity at the end of the fourth century in Jerusalem when celebrating the Mass waiting for the resurrection of Jesus. In that ritual, people put many Agarwood (Oud) incense sticks around the altar and burned to make the sweet, pure fragrance of Agarwood (Oud) spread throughout the sanctuary.

Since then, incense burner with Agarwood (Oud) has become popular and widely used in many other places. Agarwood (Oud) is a symbol of purification and protection, an offering to God, helping to create a spiritual atmosphere of prayer, directing everyone’s heart to God.

Today, the image of Agarwood (Oud) burned below the statue of God or the image of the Pope holding a jar of Agarwood (Oud) leads believers often found in church rituals.

The Psalm is a place to store many meanings of offering Agarwood (Oud) incense to the Lord, for example, Psalm 141 likens the use of the previous Agarwood (Oud) incense to the offering to receive the protection and blessing of God. In the Middle Ages, Agarwood (Oud) incense offering had three important meanings. In the Middle Ages, three main meanings of Agarwood (Oud) incense were given: first, to honor the object offered by the incense (character, place and objects); secondly, the Agarwood (Oud) incense is a gift to relieve the anger to ask for forgiveness and repentance; Thirdly, Agarwood (Oud) incense is a form of exorcism.

Agarwood (Oud) not only plays an important role in Catholicism and Protestantism but is also used in the anointing rites of the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church and some Protestant churches, mention the important role of this precious wood in blessing, prayer, funeral, etc. Holy oil is usually made from olive oil, Agarwood (Oud), myrrh and musk.

Agarwood (Oud) in the Christian Bible

Agarwood (Oud) is mentioned many times in the Old Testament of the Christian Bible, first where Balaam described God’s vision of Israel and likened their settlements to those of aloe trees planted by the LORD (Number 24: 6). Also in the Old Testament, the noble and charismatic importance of Agarwood (Oud) is presented in Psalm 45: 8, recounting the king’s preparation for marriage, saying “all your robes are marinated with fragrances of myrrh, aloe vera and cinnamon cassia.

The alluring power of the scent, including the scent of Agarwood (Oud) wood is further described in Song of Songs 4:14 about the pleasure of sexual attraction between two lovers, in which one praised the other, “Her garden is a garden of all fragrances, with myrrh and aloe vera and all the best spices. Similarly, in Proverbs 7:17, there is an invitation for a woman’s charm to her lover: “I have scented my bed with myrrh, aloe vera, and cinnamon.

In the New Testament, the sacred meaning of Agarwood (Oud) is stated in the gospel of John (20: 39 Section 40), in which Jesus’ body is anointed with a mixture of myrrh and aloe after the crucifixion. However, there are some scholars who have argued that aloe mentioned in this paragraph refers to aloe vera medicinal herbs and not to Agarwood (Oud). This may be based on the fact that both myrrh and aloe vera were used in ancient Egyptian mummification processes.

There may be many aromatic fragrances used in mummification to hide the smell of decomposition (Nunnamaker and Dhonau 2015) and / or to create a direct connection to worship in the afterlife (Driscoll 1953) and not to preserve the body (by natron [sodium carbonate salt] perform the most important role) (Papageorgopoulou et al. 2015; Sandison 1963).

The mention of the aloe vera in the New Testament does not depict a complex mummification process, but simply a simple anointing action, the body of Jesus wrapped with aromas in linen strips. Although Agarwood (Oud) can be described as a spice, an extract from the leaves of an aloe vera can be considered an herb rather than a spice. Although there are some inconsistencies in the use of the word aloe, it is likely that the term aloe in both the Old and New Testament refers to the aromatic spice (not a bitter plant) used as a perfume (Browning 2010; Zohary 1982).

Therefore, the fragrant aloes as described in the Bible and recognized by many authors are from the Agarwood (Oud) tree (Balfour 1866; Greppin 1988; Harbaugh 1855; McKenna and Hughes 2014) and should not be confused with bitter aloe (Balfour 1866; Rimmel 1865; Schoff 1922; Tielel 1885).
