The explosive growth of Aquilaria Crassna in Oudh (Agarwood) producing industry
According to HAGA Oud’s own summary of 2019 and 2020 data, there is a huge demand for finished products (direct use), especially Aquilaria Crassna’s finished Oudh (Agarwood) production has a very high growth rate.
All imported GCC categories grew by 11.25%, in Aquilaria Crassna alone
All imported GCC categories grew by only 11.25%, but in Aquilaria Crassna alone, finished Oudh chips grew 47.14% after 4 years from 2017-2020 which is an impressive explosive growth in the industry.
Although the government and non-governmental agencies have not yet issued any guidelines on the quality classification of Oudh (Agarwood), according to Dr. Le Cong Kiet, the criteria for evaluating Oudh (Agarwood) are usually based on origin, strength, taste, shape, size, color, weight, density, purity and type of Aquilaria Crassna to create Oudh (Agarwood).
In trade, the classification of Oudh (Agarwood) is completely based on experience, feeling, and consensus and through direct human activities such as seeing, touching, peeling, pressing, burning, tasting, smelling, etc.
Good quality Oudh (Agarwood) made from Aquilaria Crassna can dissolve in alcohol to 40-50%. After saponification with KOH and distillation, there will be about 13% oil. In the oil, the main components are Benzylaxeton C6H5-CH2COCH3 26%, Metoxybenzylaxeton 53%, and Tecpen Alcon 11%.
In essential oils, the main compounds are cinnamic acid and its derivatives (Cinnamic acid, B-fenilacrilic acid: C9H8O2, C6H5CH-CHCOOH).
“Pain makes the Aquilaria Crassna turn into Oudh (Agarwood)” – the ancient legend of the road to find Oudh (Agarwood)
“This miracle crept in the flesh of the Aquilaria Crassna tree, creating multitude and fragile as thread, flossing and hooking that must come in, hands must be gentle to let the spirit leave the mundane.”
In the old poverty days, people used to go in a 4-person team, cut the forest away, and had to have the necessary minimum equipment, it was martial arts, the art of holding axes, gold, and carving tools. Good at martial arts? For what? Is to live and die with loggers.
They are good at sniffing people, and it is okay to turn back with nothing and a gloomy face, but if you are not good at acting, martial arts are not high, if they do not die in the holy jungles also die because of trying to hold on to the nobility that God rewards with.
“The job of the sling is to seek death”. The common people often say that to tell the extreme suffering of this life-betting profession. Going to the sacred places to find the wood of the gods, the sling, despite how arrogant, have to bow their heads to pray, to have at least a few kilos of ants Aquilaria Crassna, which just got a little bit of the fragrance of Oudh (Agarwood) (to make incense, as if they still earned a little, more or less, brought back to change his life to raise his wife, his children.
“The value of Oudh (Agarwood) is more than gold, it is diamonds, rubies.” Oudh (Agarwood), is more expensive than cocaine, and rarer than rubies. If it’s just a fragrance, why is it worth as much as a legacy?
What makes people can exchange this life is considered the mascot of heaven and earth, dwells in the holy place of poisonous water, through many years of accumulation of heaven’s spirit, so it can bring in luck and fortune, a prosperous career, prosperous life for the owner.
However, the value of Oudh (Agarwood) lies in its miraculous use in the preparation of medicinal herbs, a wood that is like an elixir, especially in Eastern medicine. A few drops of Hac Ky (dark Oudh (Agarwood) soaked rice wine can stop the pain, and abdominal pain, Rubbing out cold with Oudh (Agarwood) rice wine can make the body refreshed immediately.
Disinfecting sickness, purifying the air, and relaxing the mind and concentration are also the benefits of Oudh (Agarwood) that people are always seeking for.
Varieties of Aquilaria Crassna can create Oudh (Agarwood) in Vietnam
Aquilaria Crassna tree grows best under the conditions of some tropical rain forests in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, suitable with red basalt soil or gravel soil. When the tree is diseased or affected by nature, its resin overflows to cover the wound, creating an oily and fragrant piece of wood. Depending on the amount of resin formed that people in the profession call by different names: tok, Oudh (Agarwood), kynam.
- Tok: due to a partial transformation of wood, forming dark lines like hair (low amount of essential oils, often used as making incense)
- Oudh (Agarwood): this is due to the incomplete differentiation of the wood particles, absorbing Oudh (Agarwood) oil more than tok, brown, or black stripes. The better the Oudh (Agarwood) type, the less floating in the water.
- Kynam: is the best type, due to the complete transformation of wood particles, absorbing a lot of Oudh (Agarwood) essential oil, dark brown, black, green, yellow, or white. Kynam is heavy, submerged in water, and has a bitter taste, often formed in the core of the Aquilaria Crassna tree.
03 methods of the formation process of Oudh (Agarwood) of Aquilaria Crassna
There are about 16 species of Aquilaria Crassna trees that can give Oudh (Agarwood). At the end of September 2007, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also organized a workshop on Aquilaria Crassna.
Attending the workshop were many scientists, businesses and representatives of some local leaders to evaluate the results of Aquilaria Crassna planting. Scientists have come to a conclusion about the formation process of Oudh (Agarwood), including 3 methods:
- Causing mechanical (physical) wounds on the body of Aquilaria Crassna: this method is very simple and easy to perform, but the probability of success is low (mainly cutting pieces of drums, scrap metal, nails… to close them) into the trunk to create mechanical wounds so that the tree creates Oudh (Agarwood).
- Impact by some chemical (chemical) stimulation on the body of Aquilaria Crassna: This method is effective in a short time. However, there is a disadvantage in that in the product there are some toxic substances such as CI, SO4, PO3… which affect the quality of Oudh (Agarwood) and are not favored by consumers.
- Impact by some biological products (biological) on the stem of Aquilaria Crassna: In fact, this method is to cause diseases in plants with probiotics or bacteria that have been tested to be effective. Currently, the research on this method has had very positive results, a high success rate, and no toxic residues in Oudh (Agarwood).
