Biological Characteristics Of Aquilaria Crassna Pierre (Part 2)
Humidity:
Aquilaria crassna Pierre prefers moisture, is not subject to flooding. Adequate moisture for plant growth is around 80%. This species is poorly tolerant to draught at its young life stage. It there is not enough moisture, trees will stop growing or die. Moisture maintenance is extremely important for trees to grow, especially at the age of 2-3. Irrigation is not necessary when trees are well-grown because their roots grow deeply into the soil to absorb water available in nature.
Rainfall:
There are two distinct in Vietnam. The rainy season lasts about 6 months, but plays a critical role in water supply for all year around. As Aquilaria crassna Pierre has a poor draught tolerance, rainfall has direct impacts on tree growth and development.
In natural conditions, Aquilaria crassna Pierre is distributed in areas having an average minimum rainfall of 1,200 mm in a year. Annual rainfall influences a large area, and this is one of the prerequisite factors in selecting and determining areas of growing.
Soil:
It can be said that Aquilaria crassna Pierre can be grown on all types of soil, excluding poorly sandy soil, limestone, inundated soils or actively acid sulphate oil. Soil texture must be physically moderate to good. It means that topsoil is porous and friable and is able to retain moisture and drains well and has pH from 5-6. Soil must be nutritionally rich in organic and inorganic substances.
Soil factor not only have direct impacts on tree growth and development, but also are related to agarwood production. According to Nguyen Hong Lam ( Institute of Forest specialties), agarwood production in nature is related to types of soil, site factors such as weathered rocked, soil and slope.
a,Types of soils:
Some research result showed that in natural conditions, golden feralite soil, developed on sandstone slabs, will assist some trees in producing agarwood and agarwood quality is much higher in commercial stand than others distributing on brown red soils developed on granite rocks.
b,Site factors:
As often, Aquilaria crassna Pierre, distributed on high moutain slopes with natural mixture of rock and soil, produces a large amount of agarwood and high quality agarwood, and the reverse is true.
In reality, agarwood products and quality, produced by Aquilaria crassna Pierre varies from place to place. In Vietnam, agarwood collected in the central Vietnam are always higher in quality and produced in a larger amount in any other places in Vietnam, especially Van Gia -Van Ninh in Khanh Hoa province, has been well-known for the world’s best quality agarwood.
The above characteristics present Aquilaria crassna Pierre’s difference in geography in nature. In relation to man made agarwood, there has been no conclusion about relationship between agarwood quality and geographical factors.
