IV. Classification of Agarwood (Oud)
Density is the most important criteria to evaluate the quality of Agarwood (Oud) (according to Material Medica and Description of the Plants in Southern China). Agarwood (Oud) is divided into 3 categories: totally submerged in water, semi-submersible floating in water and completely floating on water. Agarwood (Oud) is classified into three categories and each category has different types:
- The first frade Agarwood (Oud) called Ky nam or Ky: This is the grade Agarwood (Oud), which is oily, light, soft and flexible. It tastes sour, spicy, bitter and sweet and is naturally fragrant. Especially in the burning, scent produces special fragrance, green smoke flying straight up in the air.
- The second grade-Agarwood (Oud): Agarwood (Oud) is less oily, heavy and bitter. When in burning, it produces fragrance, and white colour smoke flying around and varnished right away.
- The third grade being Tok: Tok has lesser rate of oil deposits than Agarwood (Oud).
The government and non-governmenttal agencies have not provided any guidelines on classifying the Agarwood (Oud) quality.
According to Dr Le Cong Kiet, criteria for Agarwood (Oud) evaluation is often based on origin, intensity, flavors, shapes, sizes, colors, weight, density, and purity and types of Aquilaria crassna Pierre that produces Agarwood (Oud). In trades, classification of Agarwood/Oud is entirely based on experience, feeling, and consensus and through direct human activities such as look, touch, peel, press, burn, taste, smell, etc.
Status of distribution of Aquilaria crassna Pierre ex Lecomte in Vietnam
Aquilaria crassna Pierre belonging to Magnoliopsida, order of Myrtales and family of Thymelaeaceae. This spicies is distributed from the western India to Papua New Guinea, from the southern China (Kwantung Yunnan) to Lesser Sunda Island (Ding Hou 1960, 1964). In Vietnam, this species is relatively distributed in the northern provinces of Quang Ninh, Bac Giang, Hoa Binh down to Phu Quoc Island of Kien Giang province.
- In the north: Hoang Lien Son, Vinh Phu, Hoa Binh, Ha Tay, Quang Ninh, Bac Ha, Cao Bang, Lang Son, Ha Bac.
- In the centre: Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, Quang Nam, Da Nang, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa.
- In the central highlands: Gia Lai, Kontum, Daclak
- In the southern: Binh Thuan, Lam Dong, Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai, Tay Ninh, An Giang, Kien Giang, Phu Quoc Island.
Key areas where there were various movements of growing most Aquilaria crassna Pierre in Vietnam included the north central, south central, west central, southeast and southwest of Vietnam. In the north central region, mainly in Ha Tinh, the south central region, primarily in Quang Nam, in the Central Highlands, mainly in Kon Tum (recently Dac Lak and Dak Nong but no statics because forest owners are private sectors). The southeast region, mainly in Binh Phuoc, southwest mainly in Kien Giang ad An Giang.
